Sustainability Campaign: Candle Wax Waste Reduction & Recycling

For more than 6 years, GLE has recycled, refurbished and repurposed old products such as event decor, used car parts, left over construction materials for our valued clients such as the Yas Marina Circuit, Farah Leisure and Ain Dubai.
Statistical Research
The United Arab Emirates witnessed an increase in building fires in 2021, with authorities recording 2,090 incidents compared to 1,968 in 2020. This represents a year-on-year rise of 6.2%. Notably, residential properties experienced the most significant growth, with fires in villas and apartment buildings increasing by 8.4%.
Geographically, Abu Dhabi reported the highest number of fire incidents (775), followed by Dubai (364). Other emirates such as Ajman (304), Sharjah (293), Fujairah (149), Ras Al Khaimah (145), and Umm Al Quwain (60) also reported fire incidents. It is important to note that nearly 44% of these incidents were classified as minor, while major fires comprised only 1.2% of the total.
The Objectives
This environmental campaign aims to tackle waste and resource depletion by promoting reuse, recycling, and proper disposal practices. Through community engagement and clear communication, it encourages residents to adopt sustainable habits for a healthier planet. Additionally, the campaign provides support for responsible waste disposal and sets measurable goals to track progress and continuously improve environmental performance year after year.
Call to Action
GLE recognizes the importance of environmental protection and tackles waste management through a recycling initiative. This initiative aims to encourage responsible waste disposal habits across UAE communities, ultimately minimizing waste accumulation and promoting sustainable practices in the region.
Collection Process
1. Box Placement:
- Start with 1 collection box at a designated location in Dubai Marina, UAE.
- Gradually expand to 4 additional boxes in other Dubai Marina buildings.
- Implement a 2-week rotation schedule, moving boxes to new locations after each period.
2. Participant Contribution:
- Residents can deposit their used candles in the designated collection boxes.
- This campaign aims to raise awareness about candle wax reusability and encourage participation from high-rise buildings and residents across Dubai Marina.
3. Campaign Impact:
- Collected candles will be recycled, reducing landfill waste and associated emissions.
- The program aims to establish a benchmark for future initiatives.
Expansion Plans
Partner with government entities and charities to expand collection and processing capabilities. Implement single-stream recycling, allowing all recyclable materials (glass, plastic, metal) to be deposited in the same bin along with used candles and metal wick holders.
